Communication "PECS" Books
Styles of PictureCards
There are currently four styles of PictureCards:
-
Magnetic PictureCards for use on magnetic boards, refrigerators
or other magnetic surfaces – magnetic boards, etc. NOT provided.
-
PictureCard Communication “Keys” for use on a key chain.
These provide for "hands free", easy access as these key chains can be attached to
your belt loop. This PictureCard System creates a portable communication system which can be
used anywhere.
-
Velcro PictureCards for use on an 8-1/2x11” VelcroBoard (which we also
provide); these can be 3-hole punched and kept in a binder for easy access.
-
Write-on PictureCard Communication Boards for use with washable markers.
These can include the alphabet, numbers, colours, a child’s photo and name, and so on.
These can be used to help your child learn to colour, colour-match, print the alphabet, numbers,
etc. and can also help your child develop fine motor skills.

P25 – Learn My Name "Personalized" Program
@ $20.00
Provide us with a digital picture and the first name of your child. We will then create a Learn My Name Program just for your child. This can be used to help your child learn to recognize himself, to recognize his name and to print his own name (using water-based markers). |
|
Along with the symbols, images that you provide (preferably digital) can be added to personalize
the learning materials. Suitable pictures can also be found using GOOGLE.
The exact words you want for your son, daughter or student to learn can be used, with the words matched
with appropriate symbols or pictures. To remove distraction, the backgrounds are usually removed from pictures. This
will allow
your son, daughter or student to concentrate on the item pictured.
The pictures with words are then printed, cut out and laminated to make laminated
picture/word cards; then velcro is attached. These are then used on a velcro base with "sentence strips".
The illustrated "mini-PECS book" was totally personalized to the child's needs and he is using the book to learn:
- picture recognition
- word recognition with the pictures as visual cues
- fine motor and hand-eye coordination
- early sentence structure, and
- categorization
I modify simple reading books by adding laminated picture cards instead of straight words or adding real pictures instead of cartoon
pictures. Why? Because that is what your son, daughter or student would see in his or her
own environment.
The illustrated "mini-PECS book" includes: |
| Page 1 |
- "I want" "TO" ...
- "Give me" THE ...
- "I" "feel" ...
The "sentence strip" is velcroed onto this page. The velcro
strip is removable so that your son, daughter or student will begin
the sentence with cards from one of the combinations above
(on page 1); then he will flip to the appropriate page
of laminated picture cards to find the appropriate word/picture to finish the sentence. |
